The 35th Law of Power: Master the Art of Timing
The 35th law of the 48 Laws of Power states that “never seem to be in a hurry—hurrying betrays a lack of control over yourself, and over time. Always seem patient, as if you know that everything will come to you eventually.” This law is based on the principle that people are more likely to be persuaded and influenced by those who seem to be in control.
There are a few ways to use the 35th law of power. One way is to avoid appearing rushed or flustered. If you seem like you’re always in a hurry, people will think that you’re not in control of your life.
Another way to use the law is to wait for the right moment to act. Don’t rush into things before you’re ready. Wait until the time is right, and then strike.
You can also use timing to your advantage in negotiations. If you’re in a hurry to make a deal, you’re more likely to make a bad deal. But if you’re patient and wait for the right moment, you can get a better deal.
Examples:
- A politician might wait until the right moment to announce their candidacy for office. If they announce too early, they might lose momentum. But if they wait too long, someone else might beat them to the punch.
- A businessperson might wait until the right moment to launch a new product. If they launch too early, the product might not be ready. But if they wait too long, someone else might beat them to the market.
- A negotiator might wait until the right moment to make a concession. If they make a concession too early, they might give up too much. But if they wait too long, they might lose the negotiation altogether.
Of course, there are times when you need to act quickly. But if you can learn to master the art of timing, you’ll be more likely to make the right decisions and achieve your goals.
Here’s a simple example of how the 35th law of power can be used:
- Let’s say you’re a salesperson trying to close a deal with a potential client. You know that the client is interested in your product, but they’re also hesitant to make a decision. You could use the 35th law of power by waiting for the right moment to make your pitch.
- If you try to close the deal too early, the client might feel pressured and back away. But if you wait until the client is ready to make a decision, you’ll be more likely to succeed.
Of course, there are times when you need to act quickly. But if you can learn to master the art of timing, you’ll be more likely to make the right decisions and achieve your goals.
